The Happiest People I Know Have Seven Things in Common:

They realize thinking about and serving only themselves will only leave them alone in the end. They know commitment isn’t a curse, instead embracing our appropriate responsibilities is the way towards meaning. (including a responsibility to our neighbor / community / humanity). They prioritize their emotional health by receiving their limits and asking for help. They believe in larger life philosophy that both motivates with purpose (i.e. goals, convictions) and brings humility by seeing one’s own short comings ( i.e. not consistent with own beliefs).

How a Christian Should (Think About Their) Vote

How does a Christian process voting this year? Or really any election year? The question is weighing heavily on many faithful Christians’ hearts and minds as November 3rd approaches. There are many, many good articles out there regarding voting and the 2020 election. I don’t claim my ideas as novel…

Millennials & the Minor Themes of Harry Potter

Reflections on the minor themes of Harry Potter, as I read through the series again, now, in my thirties: The focus on outsiders and bullying. (See: Malfoy-Potter, Snape-Potter, Slytherin-Ron, Luna Lovegood’s oddities, uncouth Neville Longbottom, Herimone’s smarts, Dudley-Potter, house elves, etc.) Positive and negative roles of mystery in life. (Sirius Black’s nature, Snape’s nature, Dumbledore in general, the scar, the prophecy, slow unfolding of who the Potter’s were, Ginny…

Four Gospel Moments from Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan creates brilliant films within a notably godless universe. His films have the realism of humanity coupled with the extraordinariness of characters or circumstances featuring moments which the laws of nature or science bent (i.e his Batman films, Inception, Interstellar, etc.) However, Dunkirk, feels much more precious and powerful…

Riding the Long Bus: People & Places

I am on a $20 ride from Louisville to ATL on a Mega-Bus. We sat under a bridge in a tough area of Louisville while the bus was supposedly rambling towards us. Another spot between another spot onwards. The hour felt long as the sun rose higher. First thing that…

Rooted: Our Call to the City (Jeremiah 29)

***This my take on the much written about Jeremiah 29 as a missional manifesto, enjoy, and love your feedback. — Christ calls dead people and makes them alive. Christ creates the church universal (all believers) this way and these believers ideally form into smaller churches local to their geographic — relational proximity. The church universal is the body of Christian believers heading towards a heavenly home with Christ but they…

The Importance of Developing a New Skill Each Summer

Be like Kevin Durant and an Invitation to Join Me this Summer-Fall — I love reading. And I hold the conviction that I must never stop growing. So every summer I take a class. A class I mostly self-design by pillaging resources from the internet, friends, and libraries to combine with self study and I usually add in some learning partners along the…

#9, Commentary on Romans 1:29–32

To learn how and why I am writing this small commentary on Romans, see this former post. Now for Romans 1:29–32: 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God…

#8, Commentary on Romans 1:26–28

To learn how and why I am writing this small commentary on Romans, see this former post. Now for Romans 1:26–28: 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise…

#7, Commentary on Romans 1:24–25

To learn how and why I am writing this small commentary on Romans, see this former post. Now for Romans 1:24–25: 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about…
